Robert "Bob" Davis, age 93, Major, USAF (Ret), a World War II combat veteran, passed away on June 6, 2015. He was born on May 14, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA, the 7th of 8 children to Edward and Bertha (Stewart) Davis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his beloved wife, Charlotte (Dowdell), all of his siblings: Edward, Bertha, Isabella, Francis, Dorothea, Mary and Paul, and by his son, Robert Davis, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Romane, son Michael (Cheryl) Davis, and by his grandchildren, Robert Davis III, Patricia (Michael) Spiegel, Brian Davis and two great-grandsons, Greyson and Declan Spiegel. He will also be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews, their families and by a multitude of friends.
Bob was raised in West Philadelphia and joined the Army Air Corps early in World War II. He flew as a crew member on heavy bombers out of England. He returned home and married his sweetheart, Charlotte. Bob remained in the military after the war, raised his family, lived in Texas, Illinois, Virginia, Great Britain, Ohio and California and retired from the Air Force as a Major in 1964.
After his military retirement, he worked for various aerospace firms in Southern California and Montreal, Canada and retired a second time in 1985. Throughout their marriage, Bob and Char loved returning "home" to Philadelphia for summer vacations and special family times. They also enjoyed traveling and hosting visits from their many siblings and their families. They would often combine the two by acting as "tour guides" during large trips to places like Yosemite, Death Valley, the Rocky Mountains and Expo '67. They also took cruise vacations to the Alaskan glaciers, the Panama Canal, and across the North Atlantic. Bob was a sharp card player and family gatherings always included various card games late into the night.
Later in life, Bob and Char moved to Florida where they enjoyed watching Space Shuttle and rocket launches from their veranda. Being a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan, he loved attending spring training baseball games with his kids and grandkids. After 66 years of marriage, Charlotte passed away, and Bob moved one last time to Grand Rapids, Michigan to be near Michael and his family. He so enjoyed the frequent visits and loved reading railroad books to his two great-grandsons.
