Robert J. "Bob" McCarthy passed away on December 4, 2018 at the age of 89.
Born on July 5, 1929, he lived a long and happy life, devoted to his faith and his family.
Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years and best friend, Mary Jean (Mack) McCarthy, along with his sister Margaret "Peg" Willis. He was preceded in his death by his brother, Francis X. "Fran" McCarthy.
He was a loving and devoted father to his four children: Mary Clement (Mike), Robert J. McCarthy, Jr. (Lee), Mike McCarthy (Sheila) and Patti Atkins (Dylan).
He was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather of ten grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Bob was born in his mother's house in Havertown, PA on July 5, 1929.
His parents, along with his brother and sister, were among the founding members of Sacred Heart Parish (Manoa), where Bob was a lifelong parishioner.
Throughout his life, Bob exhibited a rare combination of intelligence, wisdom, humility, kindness and humor.
More importantly to him, he was a man of faith who dedicated his life to being a loving and devoted husband and a world-class father who enthusiastically provided incredible amounts of energy, time and love to his children.
Bob also enjoyed spending time with his brother and sister and their children, and had great memories of many extended family gatherings.
After graduating from Sacred Heart School and West Catholic High School for Boys, Bob received numerous undergraduate and post-graduate degrees and certificates from a wide array of higher education institutions, including Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Villanova University, Temple University, St. Joseph's University and LaSalle College.
Bob was as an educator and administrator in the School District of Philadelphia for 35 years.
He taught Math and Latin at Shaw Junior High School in Southwest Philadelphia before becoming a Vice Principal and then Principal at Furness High School in South Philadelphia.
After serving at Furness High School for decades, Bob become Principal of the Bodine School for International Affairs (one of the District's Magnet schools) in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia.
He retired in 1993 and spent his many remaining years traveling with, and enjoying the company of, his wife, children, grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing on Friday, December 7, 2018 from 9:30-10:20 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 110 N. Manoa Road, Havertown, PA 19083, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., and Interment at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
