Samuel Horn

Samuel S. Horn (Sam, Uncle Ziggy, Dad, Grandpa Sammy) passed away, peacefully at home, on September 18, 2018.
He was 95 years old and for the last 11 years had been a resident of West Chester, PA.
Born on August 30, 1923, in Kassel, Germany, he was the son of Sarah (Werter) and Chaim "Joachim" Horn.
Sam had an amazing life.
After escaping from Nazi-controlled Germany at the age of 15, he and his family settled in New York City.
At 18 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, to help fight against the Nazi's. At the end of the war, he worked briefly for the U.S. State Department, translating at the Nuremberg trials.
Upon his return to the States, he attended Columbia University and then Columbia Law School in NYC, through the assistance of the G.I. Bill.
It was during his years at Columbia that he met his wife, Corina.
After brief stints in KY and OH, they settled in Satellite Beach, FL, with their 6-month old daughter Betsy, and their cat Archie.
There he worked for the U.S. Air Force. In late 1969 the family, which now included son Tom, moved to Wheaton, MD, outside Washington, D.C.
For the rest of his illustrious career he continued to work for several different branches of the U.S. Government, including the U.S.P.S., the U.S. Army, and the Judge Advocate General corps. Sam always said that Uncle Sam had been very good to him and he wanted to pay the U.S. back.
Sam had always been very athletic and played soccer from an early age, all the way into his late 40's.
He also coached Tom's soccer team for several years. In his 50's he turned to tennis, which became a life-long love and obsession.
He loved competing, and played in tournaments up and down the East Coast, including in the Super Senior tournaments. He finally hung up his tennis racket in his very late 80's, when he felt he wasn't as competitive as he would like to be. At that time he turned to playing contract bridge with equal measures of enthusiasm.
Sam also had a deep and life-long love and appreciation for music, mostly classical, but also some early Rock-N-Roll, including the Beatles.
In the last four years of his life Sam was lovingly cared for by a wonderful team of caregivers who enabled him to live out his life in the comforts of his own home.
Of special note is Damion, who was with Sam from day one and who is a most loving and caring man.
He and Sam formed a special bond.
Sam is survived by his wife of 63 years, Corina, and their two children, Betsy and Tom. He also leaves behind his beloved daughter-in-law Patty, wife to Tom and mother of his three wonderful granddaughters, Sarah, Gracie, and Charlotte, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Family and friends are invited to visit 1:00-3:00 PM Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA, 610-431-9000 followed by his Funeral service 3:00 PM. Interment 2:00 PM Monday at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA.
