Sarah Rex Geary

Sarah McCune Rex Geary departed unexpectedly on April 7, 2025. She was born in New York City on May 9, 1961, to Robert McKay Rex and Jean Foley Rex. As the eldest of four sisters who grew up in Darien, Connecticut, Sarah took immense pleasure in her high school days and friends. She was the enthusiastic captain of the Darien High School varsity cheerleading squad. Sarah proudly attended Bucknell University, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, studied a semester in Strasbourg, France, lived her senior year at “Love Street,” and developed many life-long relationships. She graduated with a BS in Economics and worked in both Manhattan and Boston in the property and casualty industry, managing the insurance needs for large clients, including Roosevelt Island Tramway and Logan Airport.

Sarah loved her family–nothing was more important. This devotion began early in her youth when five great aunts and special grandparents indulged Sarah and her sisters. Her loving mother and father continued with this abundance of affection, so that when it was Sarah's turn to be a mother and spouse, she was simply the best! Sarah was so proud of her daughters Emily, Katie, and Gigi, and all of their achievements. She was passionately engaged with them, and they with her. She happily made Halloween costumes for them, attended countless sporting events, remembered each special occasion, dispensed sage counsel, and delighted in their marriages and life successes. Earlier this year, she was thrilled to learn her world would soon be graced by three grandchildren.

People simply loved Sarah. She had a rare DNA of compassion and true interest in each person’s stories, dreams and challenges. She was fun to be with; she believed in you and made you feel great about yourself. In addition to bringing her so many genuine friendships, these qualities made her a key contributor to her local community where she served as the President of the Wayne Elementary School PTA and as a board member of the Radnor Educational Foundation. They also served her well later in life in her professional career with Tiffany & Co., where she spent fifteen successful years as a sales professional. She befriended customers who went home feeling wonderful about their purchases, and mentored her fellow colleagues; always there to offer guidance, a listening ear, and a boost of encouragement, whether they needed help with work or just a little personal support.

Most friends and associates never guessed that for 50 years Sarah navigated her condition as a Type 1 diabetic. She was an inspiration to anyone who knew her, never complaining or feeling pitiful, rather quietly and bravely handling her diabetes. She courageously carried to term and delivered three healthy children. Nothing held her back.

Happiness for Sarah was spending time with family and friends. Special places included Nantucket, Lake Kezar, NH, Williamsburg, VA, and seeing the summer sun set over Long Island Sound from the Wee Burn Beach Club. She had great fun running up and down the tennis court, going for walks in her special places, and was an avid gardener. In these adventures she was lovingly devoted to her husband John. Sarah and John met in Rowayton, Connecticut in 1984 and remained inseparable ever since. Their partnership and respect for one another were evident in daily life and a magnificent example for their children.

Sarah is survived by her husband John, of 39 years; her three daughters, Emily (Jimmy) Bradshaw, Katharine (Gregory) Certo, and Jean “Gigi” Rex Geary; her father, Robert (Isa) Rex, her sisters Elizabeth (William) Barnes, Susan Conway (Chad) Olsen, Joanna (Robert) Forsyth; cousin Nicole (Brayden) Clement; so many special nieces and nephews, whose accomplishments she was incredibly proud of; and sisters-in-law and extraordinary girlfriends she could always count on. She was predeceased by her mother, Jean Foley Rex; uncle Thomas Foley Jr.; and grandparents Thomas “Grampie” Foley and Helen “Gabby” Foley.

When she was eleven, Sarah attended the Joslin Diabetes Camp where she learned the skills and knowledge to manage her diabetes. Family and friends are invited to a Viewing from 10:00-11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at St. Katharine of Siena at 104 S. Aberdeen Ave, Wayne, PA 19087. All are invited to wear Spring colors to honor Sarah and celebrate her life.
