Sheila Margaret Igoe (nee Murphy), age 102, of Upper Darby, PA, passed away on February 8, 2025. Born in County Derry, Northern Ireland, she was the daughter of the late John and Bridget Murphy (nee Oliver).
Sheila was a woman of extraordinary determination and resilience. In 1949, she ventured across the Atlantic on her own, demonstrating a pioneering spirit that would not only shape her own destiny but also serve as an inspiration for others when she later assisted her siblings and cousin in making their own journeys to the United States.
A dedicated seamstress for more than 70 years, Sheila found her professional home at Weinberg's in the Manoa Shopping Center, where she devoted 24 years of her life honing her craft. Revered by her colleagues and customers alike, her boss affectionately referred to her as "the girl with the golden hands," a testament to her unparalleled skill and artistry in fabric and thread.
Sheila's life was imbued with a profound love for her family, which was at the very core of her existence. While she possessed a myriad of interests, it was her dedication to those she held dear that defined her. Growing up, she embraced the joy of dance, taking inspiration from her favorite teacher, Ms. McLaughlin, who not only ignited her passion for movement but also became her mentor in the art of sewing. This love for dancing continued throughout her life, particularly in the cherished moments spent ballroom dancing with her beloved husband, Jack. Together, they reveled in the joy of travel, worked hand in hand on various home projects, and walked to Mass every morning, their faith anchoring their union in profound ways.
An unwavering devout Catholic, Sheila was a highly involved member of St. Bernadette of Lourdes Church. She took great pride in helping to form the Rosary Group at her church, embodying her deep commitment to her faith and her community. Her volunteerism at both the church and local school showcased her generous spirit, earning her the love and respect of all whom she encountered. Sheila’s secrets to longevity were simple yet profound—healthy eating, daily exercise, clean living, and most of all a strong faith sustained her throughout her years.
Sheila was the beloved wife of the late John T. “Jack” Igoe; loving mother of John T. Igoe (Maureen McEldrew), Patricia A. Igoe, and the late Barry F. Igoe; caring sister of Anne Brady (the late Matt), Tommy Murphy, and Patsy Murphy (the late Kathleen). Predeceased by her siblings, Agnes McDaid (Paddy), James Murphy, and Bridget Patricia Cook (James Kenneth), and her cousin, Betty Glass (Mel). Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
