Shirley Elizabeth Parsons Johnson, R.N., 90 of Glen Mills, PA died on Pentecost Sunday April 27, 2014 at Brinton Manor Nursing Home.
Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Morton R. (Dick) Johnson with whom she shared 43 years of marriage until his death in 1987.
Born in Philadelphia in 1923, she was the daughter of the late Captain Isaac Ivison Parsons, M.D. and Elizabeth Henessey Parsons, R.N. She was raised in a beautiful home at Front & Olive Streets in Media, PA.
Shirley was a 1940 graduate of the Notre Dame de Namur Academy and of the St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 where she earned her R.N. degree.
Shirley was a private duty nurse for over 60 years at the Lankenau, Crozer-Chester and University of Pennsylvania Hospitals. She often accompanied her patients to their homes as they completed therapy and recovery programs. Her life reflected the medical profession she so loved in the dedicated care she gave her patients.
Shirley was a pianist and lover of music, art, antiques, flea markets, orchids and roses.
Her fondest memories were of the Cape May Point beaches, traveling throughout the USA and taking long walks with her husband and friends in the country.
In her youth, she was an avid horsewoman at the Rose Tree Hunt with her best friend, Margaret (Peggy) Atkinson of Grant's Pass ,OR.
She especially loved the old hay wagon rides with her cousins, the Parsons, Wolff, and Welsh clans, in their family orchards in Lima and hosting many family reunions over the years on Skyline Drive.
She was the loving mother of Richard Parsons Johnson of Unionville, PA, Isaac Ivison Johnson (Denise) of Exton, and John Edward Johnson (Rosemary) of Glenmoore; loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews from around the country.
She was predeceased by her son, Michael Dane Johnson in 2008.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing 10:00-10:50 AM Friday and to her Funeral Mass 11:00 AM at SS Simon & Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Ct. West Chester, PA 19382. Interment will be at Media Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
