Steven A. Florio, 53, passed away on November 18, 2022. Steven was born in Drexel Hill, PA, to Robert and Harriet Florio. He attended Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and Model Secondary School for the Deaf. Steven went on to receive his BS in Accounting from Gallaudet University and later his MS in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from Northeastern University.
Steven is someone who loved sharing ideas with others and was a well-respected leader and advocate whose passion was to elevate the quality of life for the deaf community. Steven was formerly employed at Global Technical Communications, LLC as Vice President of Government Affairs, Commissioner for Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Boston, MA, Executive Director for Rhode Island Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Providence, RI, and JP Morgan Chase in DE. In his professional role, Steven was instrumental as one of the co-founders of the National Association of State Agencies of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing which brought all D/HH state agencies together to collaborate on various issues and led the organization as its president for the first six years. He also enjoyed volunteering with various organizations including Board Member of Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, President of Pennsylvania Society for the Advancement for the Deaf and being involved with the PSAD Leadership Training Program, Board Member for Rhode Island School for the Deaf, Co-chair for the Fulton 3 Strategic Planning for the National Association for the Deaf, Founding board member of International Deaf Emergency and assisting with disaster relief for Haiti, Task Force member of Deaf Pickleball USA and helping establish two GUAA chapters in Philadelphia and New England. Steve was also a proud member of the Kappa Gamma Fraternity. Steve received many awards and accolades for his volunteerism, and a few include the 2000 JP Morgan Chase Volunteer of the Year, Gallaudet University’s 2005 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, and being inducted into Pennsylvania School for the Deaf‘s first Hall of Lifetime Achievement in 2020.
Steven spent his childhood years in Broomall, PA. In 2003, he married the love of his life, Michelle, and went on to raise three boys in Franklin, MA for 15 years before relocating to St. Augustine, FL. He was a huge fan of all Philadelphia sports teams and was also a huge fan of supporting his boys in all their endeavors. He could always be found in the bleachers videotaping all their sporting games despite his busy schedule.
He was the beloved husband of Michelle (nee Majeri) and beloved father to three sons: Kyle, Luke, and Justin. He was also the beloved brother of Robert, James (Tammi), and Jack (Meg). He was a fun-loving uncle to all his nieces and nephews, Taylor, Tiffany, Teague, JP, Tessa, Anna, Paul, Gabrielle, and Caroline. He is predeceased by a daughter, Hope, and his parents, Robert, and Harriet Florio (nee Schwindt).
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 6:00-9:00 PM Friday, November 25, 2022 and 9:00-10:00 AM Saturday, November 26, 2022 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073.
