Sydney Powell, III
January 18, 1945 — October 30, 2018
Sydney J. Powell, III, age 73, of Devon, PA, passed away on October 30, 2018 at home. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Dr. Sydney J. Powell, Jr. and Margaret Powell (nee Valentine).
Sydney is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine Powell (nee Stroebele), his loving daughters Elizabeth "Liza" Tulloch (Peter) and Emily Powell Kramer (Matt), his grandchildren Peter Tulloch, III and Elin Tulloch and Lila and Conrad Kramer. He is also survived by his siblings Isabel P. Martin, Kevin Powell and Gregory Powell. He was predeceased by his sisters Margaret P. Corbett and Cynthia P. Brennan. He was known to all as "Uncle Syd".
Sydney served in the United States Army with the rank of Sergeant, having spent time in Vietnam as an Infantry Fire Direction Coordinator, earning two Purple Hearts.
He was the Principal and President of Measured Marketing, a financial direct marketing firm he founded.
Throughout his career, he earned multiple industry awards for his work for large financial institutions.
Syd found deep reward in serving local communities, and in helping others to develop a strong sense of civic and community service. He participated significantly on behalf of Tredyffrin Township in the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration at Valley Forge, as well as in Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels for years. He served in his home community of Sugar Knoll as a skilled Treasurer for over twenty years, for which his service was tremendously appreciated.
Syd was an amazingly affectionate, affable and generous family man who enjoyed spending time spoiling his grandchildren, traveling, spending the winters with his beloved wife in Hawaii. The family's "MacGuyver", "Mac" was happy fixing things around the house. He loved gardening, listening to all types of music and avidly reading each day. Mac was an extremely loving and hands on grandfather, jumping the waves hand in hand in Longport, NJ, taking the kids to the Ocean City Boardwalk for amusement rides and Johnson's popcorn, and teaching them the ins and outs of winning at Monopoly and Go-Fish, followed by nightly ice cream treats at the Margate Dairy Bar.
He will be sorely missed by his family and all who knew him.
Relatives and close friends are invited to visit the family on Saturday, November 10, 2018 between 9:30-10:30 AM at St. Katharine of Siena Church, 104 S. Aberdeen Avenue, Wayne, PA and to his Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM. Interment will be private.
