Thomas Foley

August 20, 1947 — May 7, 2020

Thomas M. Foley, 72, passed away quietly at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, May 7, 2020, from complications caused by cancer.

Tom was born in 1947 in Scranton, PA, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Nolan) Foley and the first of nine children.  He is preceded in death by his father and his brother, Timothy.

He grew up in Harrisburg, PA, where he attended Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament grade school and Bishop McDevitt High School. He is also a graduate of Temple University.

Tom enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served honorably in Vietnam as a rifleman with the security division of III Marine Amphibious Force.  In the service, his primary duties included escorting generals and dignitaries to combat areas and re-supplying combined action platoons in high risk areas.

He hired on with Penn Central Railroad in 1973 and served as Local Chairman of Union Local 997 of the UTU.  He worked for Conrail and Septa, and for most of his career, he worked on the Northeast Corridor and Keystone Service for Amtrak, where he finished his career in 2012.

Throughout his life he was guided by his love of family and his Roman Catholic faith.  He was a devoted father and husband.  He enjoyed golf with his brothers and friends, gatherings with his large, loving family and gatherings and parties with his wonderful neighbors.

He followed the Philadelphia Eagles, 76ers, Temple football and basketball and was a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Phillies.

He was the beloved husband of Nancy; loving father of Thomas (Julie), Moira (Slade Ritchey), Bridget (Rob Madden), and Madeleine; devoted grandfather of Mia, Teagan, Thomas, and Nicholas. He is also survived by his first wife, Cathleen Foley, mother of Thomas, Moira and Bridget.

Tom’s family would like to thank Dr. Sameer Gupta and the staff of Bryn Mawr Medical Specialists Association Hematology-Oncology, Dr. Erik Assarsson and Dr. Linna Li of Bryn Mawr Hospital Radiation Oncology and Dr. Michael Gober of Bryn Mawr Medical Specialists Association Dermatology

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Bryn Mawr Hospital Foundation.

A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.  A memorial service will be held on a future date.
