Hanlon, William J.
William J. Hanlon (Bill), age 95 of Broomall/Drexel Hill, PA, died peacefully surrounded by family on February 11, 2025. He was the son of Marie and Thomas Hanlon, born in Philadelphia in 1929.
For close to seventy years Bill was the loving husband of Lucy Hanlon (nee: Mastromarino), marrying her shortly after his discharge from the Air Force.
Bill was the father of nine children: Donna Hanlon Carroll (Mike), Mary Usala (Anton), Bill Hanlon Jr. (Julie), Patrice Hoffman (John), Teresa Pauls (Rich), Monica O’Donnell (Joe), Tom Hanlon (Peggy), Dan Hanlon (Nancy), Matthew Hanlon (Lori). He will be dearly missed by his thirty-two grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren
Predeceased by his sister Therese Hatch, Brother Joseph Hanlon, daughter in-law Dr. Marianne Mierley Hanlon, and grandson Joshua Paul Hanlon.
Bill attended St. Aloysius Academy, West Catholic High School and earned an Associate’s degree from St. Joseph’s University.
After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, Bill was employed for thirty-two years as a Commercial Bank Small Business Lender (Girard/Mellon Bank) and later as Communication Director at Malvern Retreat House for seven years.
Bill enjoyed participating in amateur musicals (St. Andrews Players). Bill also led drives for the Heart Association and the Cancer Society, and was a thirty-two-year member of the Knights of Columbus, and a twenty-five-year member of Malvern Retreat House.
Bill volunteered in many capacities at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Drexel Hill, PA. He participated in the Choir, was a regular Cantor and Lector, and also a Cub Scout Leader. After retirement Bill did group singing in local nursing homes. Additionally, Bill loved gardening and hosting large gatherings at his home.
Throughout his life Bill was passionate about music. Besides singing he played the trumpet, ukulele, recorder and listened to all types of music up until the last day of his life.
Bill was known by all for his sense of humor and corny, one-liner jokes!
Relatives and friends are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 22 at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church, 617 South Providence Rd. Wallingford, PA 19086. Visitation 9:30 A.M. followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 A.M.
Burial following at Saint Peter and Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Camilla Hall, Immaculata University in Malvern, PA.
