WILLIAM E. "BILL" HOCKENBURY, 92, of Newtown Square, PA and formerly of Wayne, PA passed away on October 11, 2016.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Bill was the beloved son of the late William J. and Mary (Gilroy) Hockenbury.
Bill served honorably in the US Navy during World War II on the USS Tripoli, participating in German Submarine patrol in the Pacific and also aboard the USS Randolph.
In 1946, Bill was signed by the Philadelphia A's Minor League Team, playing for them in both Martinsville, VA and Savannah, GA. While playing in the Minors, he led the League in both Homers and RBI's. In 1947, he was called up to the Philadelphia A's, was on the roster but never given the opportunity to play. He was optioned to various Minor League clubs over the next few years and was All-Star 3rd baseman 4 times in Minor Leagues.
He converted to Pitcher in Winter League in Panama, Dominican Republic and pitched in the 1954 Caribbean World series in Puerto Rico. His baseball career spanned 11 years in which he played with 3 Championship Teams in Minor League and 1 Winter League. Bill also played Basketball and Tennis. He was Freshman Tennis Champ for LaSalle High School and Fisher's Park (Olney) Singles Champ.
Bill was a member of the Catholic War Vets and Holy Name Society, the Philadelphia Hot Stovers Baseball Organization for which he was President for 2 terms, ran their Baseball Clinics for youth in Philadelphia and received the "Man of the Year" Award.
He was the beloved husband of Sheila S. Hockenbury (nee Stevens); dear brother of Maryellen Dougherty (Dan), Peggy Harte, the late Jim, Tom, Dick and Ed Hockenbury; and also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Visitation 12:30-1:30 PM Saturday, October 15, 2016 at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 610-431-9000 and to his Memorial Mass 2:00 PM at SS Simon & Jude Church, 8 Cavanaugh Ct, West Chester, PA. Int. Private.
