William Tierney

William Springfield Tierney, Age 77, of Newtown Square, PA, passed on November 28, 2024.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Bill grew up in Highland Park, and was the son of the late James R. and Claire E. (née Springfield) Tierney.

Bill was the beloved husband of Joyce (née Novenson) Tierney; the loving father of Kimberly Anne Pegg (Michael), Jennifer Moira Tierney, and Elizabeth Springfield Hughes (Patrick). He was the proud grandfather of Tierney Pegg, Kiley Pegg, Molly Pegg, Murphy Hughes, and Billie Hughes. He is survived by his brothers, Kevin C. Tierney (Irene), Brian P. Tierney (the late Maud), and Michael J. Tierney (Margaret), and brother-in-law, Rev. Joseph Novenson (Barbara), and is predeceased by his brother, James R. Tierney. William is also survived by his nieces and nephews, James, Moira, Claire, Brian Jr., Bill, Madeleine, Michael Jr., and Caroline Tierney, as well as his great-nieces and great-nephews who were like grandchildren to him.

Bill honorably served in the United States Army and the Army Reserves, obtaining the rank of Captain. His military service was a testament to his character and sense of duty, values he carried into all aspects of his life.

Bill was the proud owner and operator of W.S. Tierney and Company, a well-respected car rental insurance agency located in Newtown Square, PA. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to providing quality service earned him the admiration of many in the industry.

Bill was a legendary golfer, a love that not only shaped his life but led him to form countless lifelong friendships. Many of his cherished memories were made at Llanerch Country Club, where he was a member since 1978 and at Ballyliffin Golf Club, his favorite course in Ireland. 

 Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing, Wednesday evening, December 4, 2024, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA 19073, 610-353-6300, and on Thursday morning, 9:00 to 10:00 AM at St. John Neumann Church, 380 Highland Lane, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. Interment thereafter at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
