Winfield Wilson Piper, formerly of Cochranville and more recently of Downingtown, PA, died August 19, 2020 at Paoli Hospital.
Born September 3, 1931, the son of the late Bernice H. Brown and Fred W. Piper, Winfield—better known as Wilson to friends and family—was equal parts generous, stubborn, loving, and ornery.
He was married to Hulda Jane (née: Newsome) until her death in 1992. The two met in West Grove, PA, and as Wilson often told it, it was love at first sight. He knew within minutes of meeting Jane that he would someday make her his wife. The two were married for 37 years, raising four children, serving their church community, and taking in over forty foster children together.
Wilson served his country for 22 years in the United States Army and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1969. As part of his military service, he traveled around the world, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam and serving in Germany, France, Ecuador, and Korea. In May of 1970 he was awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his service during the Vietnam War.
Wilson is survived by his children, Marion Vierheilig (Myron), Fred Piper, Elizabeth Ann Conner, David Piper and Martha Kline (Jerry); his grandchildren, Regina, Christina, Jonathan, Stephanie, Molly, Dexter, Courtney, Daniel, Eva, Andreas, and Harley; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by one brother, Frank (Anne), from Downingtown.
In addition to his wife and parents, Wilson was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters: Winnie, Shirley, Donald, Sam, Leroy, Harlan, and a baby sister who died at birth.
He had a love for bluegrass music and enjoyed “picking and grinning” with his fellow bluegrass enthusiasts, singing and playing both the mandolin and guitar. Wilson passed on his love for music to his children and grandchildren.
